GSM stands for grams per square metre. Cut a one metre square of the cloth and weigh it: that is the GSM. It is the single most useful number on a t-shirt's label, because two shirts that look identical on a screen can feel nothing alike in your hand.
What the numbers mean
- Under about 160 GSM: light, often see-through in pale colours, the kind of tee given away at events.
- Around 180 to 200 GSM: a typical retail tee.
- 240 GSM: a heavier, denser cotton that holds its shape, does not go see-through, and survives years of washing. It is our standard.
- Heavier again: structured, boxy tees, often cut oversized.
Why weight matters for a team order
A heavier cloth looks better in photographs, holds a print or embroidery without puckering, and keeps its shape after the fiftieth wash. That is the difference between merch people wear and merch they leave in a drawer.
Weight is not the whole story
Combed cotton has the short fibres brushed out, which makes it smoother and less prone to pilling. The knit matters too: a polo's pique has texture, a tee's jersey is smooth. Ask what the cloth is, not only how heavy.
How to choose
For everyday company tees, 240 GSM combed cotton is the safe choice: substantial without being hot. For a premium launch or an oversized fit, go heavier. For sport, choose a polyester performance fabric instead of cotton.
Not sure? Walk into one of our Experience Centres and feel the cloth, or ask for a sample: one piece is a real order on most of the range.
