DTG prints ink directly into the cotton, like an inkjet printer onto fabric. It handles photographs, gradients and unlimited colours with almost no feel on the garment, and it has no colour count to pay for.

What should I know about DTG printing?
The short guide.
When DTG is the right choice
Photographic artwork, illustrations with gradients, anything with more colours than you would want to pay screens for, and small runs where screen setup would dominate the cost. It is also the method to ask for when the print needs to be invisible to the touch, because nothing else gets as close to the cloth.
When it is not
On polyester and heavy blends the ink has nothing to bond to, and DTF will give you a cleaner result. On a large run of a simple one or two colour logo, screen printing is cheaper per piece once the screens are paid for. On anything that has to survive industrial washing, embroidery outlasts both.
Artwork that prints well
Send vector where you have it. Where you only have a raster file, 300 DPI at the printed size is the floor, and a transparent background saves a step. Dark garments need a white underbase, which is normal and is accounted for; it does mean a very fine line on a dark shirt will look heavier than it does on screen.

Can I order a single DTG printed t-shirt?
Yes. One piece is a real order on most of the range, and DTG suits it: there are no screens, so there is nothing to set up for one shirt.
Is DTG right for a label's first drop?
Yes, for small runs of full-colour designs on cotton, because there are no screens to pay for. Once a design sells in volume and has few colours, screen printing usually gets cheaper per piece.
What is DTG printing?
Direct to garment printing. A printer lays ink directly into the fabric of a finished t-shirt, the way an inkjet prints onto paper.
How is DTG different from DTF?
DTG puts ink into the cotton and is nearly invisible to the touch. DTF transfers a printed film onto the surface, which works on any fabric but can be felt.
Does DTG work on dark garments?
Yes, with a white underbase printed first. Colours stay accurate, though very fine detail reads slightly heavier than on a light garment.
How many colours can I use?
Unlimited. There are no screens, so colour count does not change the price.
What file should I send?
Vector if you have it. Otherwise 300 DPI at the size it will print, with a transparent background.
