What should I know about screen printing on t-shirts?
The short guide.
When screen printing wins
A simple logo in one, two or three colours across a large order. Event t-shirts, college fests, staff kit, anything where the same artwork goes on hundreds of pieces. It also produces the most saturated colour of any method, so a bold design on a black shirt looks better screen printed than it does any other way.
When it does not
Small runs, where the screen setup dominates the cost and DTG or DTF will be cheaper. Photographic artwork or gradients, which need a halftone and never look as clean. Anything with more than about four colours, where the screen count makes it uneconomic against DTG.
Designing for screen
Work in flat spot colours and keep the count down. Each colour is a screen, an alignment and a pass, so a four colour design is four times the setup of a one colour design. Trapping and overlaps need to be built into the artwork, which is why vector files matter more here than anywhere else.

How many t-shirts make screen printing worth it?
It depends on how many colours the design has, because each colour is a screen. Send the artwork and the count and the quote says which method is cheaper per piece for that order.
Is screen printing better than DTF for t-shirts?
For one to three colours across a big run, usually yes: denser colour and a lower price per piece. For small runs, full colour or polyester, DTF is better, and we do both in-house.
What is screen printing?
Ink pushed through a fine mesh screen onto the garment, with one screen cut per colour in the design.
Why does colour count change the price?
Each colour needs its own screen, setup and print pass. Unlike DTG and DTF, colour count is the main cost driver.
Is screen printing durable?
Yes, it is the most durable of the print methods. Embroidery still outlasts it.
Is it good for small orders?
No. The screen setup dominates the cost on small runs, where DTG or DTF will be cheaper.
What is the minimum order?
One piece, on most of the range. Extended colours and your own Pantone start at one roll of cloth, about 50 polos or 75 tees, because the cloth is dyed for you.
