Home, away and the goalkeeper
A single kit works until the first opponent turns up in the same colour. A second colourway of the same design solves that for every fixture after. The goalkeeper has to stand out from both teams and the referee, so the keeper shirt is usually a colour nobody else in the league wears, and it is worth deciding in the same order rather than as an afterthought.
Numbers that read from the touchline
The back number is what referees, coaches and parents read, so it needs to be large and in strong contrast with the shirt. Thin fonts and outline-only numbers on a striped or patterned body vanish at a distance. A front number is optional in most local leagues, and the name above the back number is a choice rather than a requirement.
Academies change every season
Children outgrow a shirt in a year and new players join every term. Keep the roster with ages and sizes, and keep the approved design, so each season's top-up matches the shirts already on the pitch. Sizes from 2 to 14 years and adult sizes sit in one set, so coaches can be kitted with the squad.
