T-shirt sticker printing: what it is and why prints peel

In most Indian print shops, a "sticker" print means a heat transfer: the design is made separately, on a sheet or a film, and pressed onto the t-shirt with heat. It can be cut vinyl, a printed transfer or DTF, which is the modern full-colour version. A "rubber print" usually means something else: a screen print in a thick, opaque ink that dries to a smooth, slightly raised, rubbery layer. Whether either one cracks or peels depends on the materials and how it was pressed, not on what the shop calls it.

We do embroidery and print on our own floor, and these are the two words customers use most when they describe a print they did not like. This guide explains what they mean and how to avoid the bad version. It sits in our series on decoration methods, which starts with embroidery or print.

What do shops mean by a "sticker"?

The word covers three different things:

Shop wordWhat it usually isHow it feelsWhere it fails
Sticker, vinyl stickerA plain coloured plastic sheet, cut to shape and pressed onSmooth, a little stiff, like a thin plastic layerLifts at the edges on stretchy fabric
Sticker, printed stickerA design printed onto transfer material, then pressed onDepends on the material, thin to heavyCracks if the layer is thick or under-pressed
DTFInk printed onto a film with an adhesive, pressed on so the ink bonds to the fabricA thin, flexible film you can feel with a fingertipPeels if pressed at the wrong heat or time
Rubber printA thick, opaque screen-printing ink applied directly to the shirtRaised, smooth, slightly rubberyCracks if very thick or stretched hard

Of these, the ones we print in-house are DTF and screen printing.

Is DTF a sticker?

In the sense that it is made off the garment and pressed on with heat, yes, which is why many customers call it one. But it is a different thing from a vinyl sticker.

DTF stands for direct to film. The design is printed in full colour onto a clear film, with a white layer behind the colours so they stay bright on a dark shirt. A fine adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured. Then the film goes onto the garment in a heat press, and the ink and adhesive bond to the fabric. When the film is peeled away, only the design is left.

That means:

  • Any number of colours, photographs and gradients included, at the same cost.
  • Fine detail and small text, which a cut sticker cannot follow.
  • Any fabric: cotton, polyester, blends.
  • A thin layer that flexes with the shirt rather than a sheet sitting on it.

You can still feel it, which is the honest trade-off. If you want nothing to feel at all on cotton, that is DTG, and our DTF or screen printing guide covers when a screen print is the better buy.

What is a rubber print?

"Rubber print" is a shop name for a screen print laid down in a thick, opaque ink. It looks bold and slightly glossy, it covers dark garments well, and it sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking in. It is common on fashion tees with large solid graphics.

Done well, it lasts. Done badly, with too thick a layer on a thin, stretchy shirt, it cracks the first time the shirt is pulled over a head.

Why do cheap transfers crack and peel?

Almost always for one of these reasons:

1. Under-pressing. Every transfer needs the right temperature, time and pressure. Too little of any, and the adhesive never bonds properly. It looks fine in the shop and lifts in the first wash. 2. Cheap film or adhesive. Low-grade transfer material is stiff and brittle, and it cracks along every fold. 3. The wrong material for the fabric. A stiff sheet on a stretchy tee cannot move with it, so the edges lift. 4. Large solid blocks. A big square of transfer turns a patch of the shirt into plastic. It does not breathe and it cracks across the middle. 5. Rough care. Hot washes, tumble drying and an iron straight on the print undo even a good transfer.

How can you tell before you pay?

You can check most of this in a minute, on a sample.

  • Stretch it. Pull the printed area gently sideways. A good print stretches with the shirt and recovers; a bad one shows white cracks or lifts at the edge.
  • Look at the edges. They should be flat and sealed all round, with no corner you could catch with a fingernail.
  • Fold it. Crease the print and open it again. Cheap material keeps the crease line.
  • Ask what it is. "Sticker" is not a method. Ask whether it is DTF, vinyl or a screen print, and get the answer on the mockup.
  • Wash one. If the order is large, order one piece first and wash it a few times before the rest are made. One printed t-shirt with us is from ₹465 + GST.

When is a heat transfer the wrong choice?

  • A big solid graphic on a soft tee: a screen print will feel better and last longer.
  • Polyester sports jerseys with all-over designs: sublimation puts the colour into the fibre, so there is nothing on the surface to peel.
  • A small logo that must last for years: embroidery outlasts every print.

How do you make a print last?

Turn the shirt inside out, wash it cool, skip the tumble dryer and never iron straight on the print. Our guide to washing printed t-shirts goes through it step by step.

If you want a full-colour print that bonds properly, see our DTF printing on t-shirts and polyester, done in-house, with a mockup first and a free reprint if it is not what you approved.

Quick answers

What is sticker printing on a t-shirt?

A shop name for a heat transfer: the design is made on a sheet or film and pressed onto the shirt with heat. It can mean cut vinyl, a printed transfer or DTF. Ask which one, because they wear very differently.

Is DTF printing the same as a sticker?

Not quite. DTF is pressed on with heat like a sticker, but the full-colour ink and adhesive bond to the fabric and the film is peeled away, leaving a thin, flexible print. It handles fine detail and any number of colours.

What is rubber print on a t-shirt?

A screen print in a thick, opaque ink that dries to a smooth, slightly raised and rubbery layer. It covers dark shirts well. Laid on too thick on a thin, stretchy shirt, it cracks.

Why does the print on my t-shirt crack or peel?

Usually under-pressing (wrong heat, time or pressure), cheap transfer material, a stiff layer on a stretchy fabric, large solid blocks, or hot washing and ironing on the print. Stretch and fold a sample before you pay to check.

How do I make a heat transfer print last longer?

Wash the shirt inside out in cool water, do not tumble dry, and never iron directly on the print. A well-pressed DTF print treated like this keeps its colour and its edges wash after wash.
